February hits the ground running !

We've certainly had a busy start to February.

Hobart's International Cool Climate Symposium last week brought to our vineyard a bevy of key national and international wine media and sommeliers.

On Monday 30th, we welcomed David Furer, Sarah Ahmed and Rebecca Gibb, all from the UK. On Wednesday, 'First Lady of Wine' Jancis Robinson dropped by for a tasting and a look around.

Then on Friday, we hosted a vineyard breakfast for 5 visitors, including Debra Meiburg MW (from Hong Kong), Miriam McLachlan (Brisbane), Mark Protheroe (Melbourne), Josh Fraser (Sydney) and Franck Moreau (Sydney).

Unofficially, we also received a sizeable number of Australian and NZ wine producers at the cellar door. Most of these appeared curious about what we were up to in or part of the world.

We guess our reputation for quality and innovation has extended a little further beyond our shores than we anticipated.

There were some wonderful ICCS events and presentations as well, with our 1998 Vintage Brut (en magnum) featuring on the program at the sparkling wine celebration held midweek at Ethos.

Our NV Brut Reserve was also selected by Clover Hill winemaker Karina Dambergs for inclusion in a sparkling wine workshop on the final day of the symposium.

We were very pleased to see our industry colleagues singling us out for special attention during such an important national and international event. Thanks!

Collina sets a cracking pace

Our limited release 2008 Collina continues to receive strong support from wine writers around the country. We've now had four very significant reviews for this 100% barrel-fermented Chardonnay during the past 2 months.

In late January, Canberra Times columnist Chris Shanahan praised the wine, describing it as 'an extraordinary chardonnay.'

Not to be over-shadowed by its bigger, wooded sibling, our 2010 Alfresco Riesling also received 4/5 and an excellent review at the end of January. On this occasion, it came from Melbourne wine columnist Ben Thomas.

Elsewhere, things are humming along

Our new bottling and packaging room is rapidly taking shape following the commencement of work back in December.

The room is located in a new extension at the rear of our winery and is not visible from the carpark.

The facility may well be out of sight but it will help to deliver us some additional packaging improvements, including increased labelling efficiency and a nice smooth finish to each of the labels that goes onto our bottles.

The differences may be small but we will certainly notice them. Every bit of progress matters in the wine business!

The recent spell of warm weather has not only been kind to our building program, it has received a big thumbs up from the team biodynamically managing our Granton Vineyard.

We have seen our leaf canopies develop very nicely during the season, and all vines on our property are now powering on towards what looks like being an early harvest.

Our nets are currently being made ready for use.

Meanwhile, Steve has finished installing a state of the art fermentation management package called TankNET. All stainless steel tanks in our winery have been fitted with electronic sensors that will connect to a web browser interface.

That will enable Steve and Pat to monitor and manage all our wine fermentation and storage from any location on the planet that can be connected to the internet.

TankNET is being used by hundreds of wineries around the world, including a vast number of highly-fancied producers in California's Napa Valley.
