Stefano Lubiana and Biodynamics
Fifth-generation winemaker Steve Lubiana has adopted a biodynamic approach to vineyard management in southern Tasmania.
Since 2008, Stefano Lubiana Wines has practised biodynamic vineyard management on its Granton site, 20km north of Hobart. Click HERE to view a map of our vineyard location. Biodynamics is a heightened form of organic agriculture, based on the ideas of Austrian philosopher, Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). Scroll down to read Steiner in his own words. Steiner's ideas go way beyond those of simply avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides. They represent a truly holistic approach towards working with the land. Steiner believed that every farm and vineyard should be regarded as a living system that functions according to certain dynamic life forces. These forces operate throughout the universe and are affected by the ebb and flow of various cosmic energies. Even the most distant movements of the stars have some influence over the health and behaviour of all living things. Biodynamics differs from other forms of organic farming by: * bringing into use a system of beneficial composting techniques and carefully formulated biodynamic preparations; * regulating the timing of various operations that take place on the land, such as planting and harvesting. The biodynamic agriculture movement is overseen by an independent international regulatory body called Demeter. For further information on biodynamics, click on the hyperlinks below. Steiner's own words are provided in the form they were originally delivered - as 8 lectures on Agriculture - so be sure to scroll to the bottom. http://www.biodynamics.net.au/ http://www.biodynamic.org.uk/index.php
