Chardonnay
2005 Estate Chardonnay "In pure Chablis style, with stony/minerally overtones to the bouquet and palate, tangy/citrussy fruit and bright acidity; long finish. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 95. To 2014. $43" James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2010 "Heady and complex, with waxy, nutty aromas of honeysuckle and smoky, buttery, nutty and hessian-like oak backed by leesy, cheesy undertones, this very heavily worked chardonnay shows plenty of winemaker-derived funkiness and texture. It's fresh and juicy, slightly warm and spirity, with a savoury finish. Evolved but rather refined, it partially conceals its peach and honeydew melon flavours beneath assertive influences of malolactic fermentation and alcohol. Jeremy Oliver - The Australian Wine Annual 2009 Three stars 2007 Primavera Chardonnay "Plenty of cool Tasmania locked into this approachable yet powerful Chardonnay. There's citrus, pears and stone fruit at the edge, some lees work to smooth it all into shape and terrific integrated texture. Acidity keeps it in line with a gentle cashew nut finish - 91 points." Nick Stock Wine 100 May 2009 "Elegance and chardonnay may be old bed pals in Burgundy, France, but they rarely seem to meet face to face in so-called "new world" wine countries where higher sunshine hours, warmer climates and later harvesting collude to create hot tasting wines. Here is a refreshing anomaly; Tasmania winemaker Stefano Lubiana redefines Australian chardonnay in this crisp, fresh, full-bodied white. His mantra is to make a Chablis-like chardonnay. He succeeds." Joelle Thomson - Mindfood 11 December 2008 Plenty of cool Tasmania locked into this approachable yet powerful Chardonnay. There's citrus, pears and stone fruit at the edge, some lees work to smooth it all into shape and terrific integrated texture. Acidity keeps it in line with a gentle cashew nut finish. 91 points" Nick Stock - Wine100 May 2009
Stefano Lubiana Primavera Chardonnay $28 A lightly wooded style and thus richer, more complex and fuller-bodied than the previous wines with the ripe apricot fruit, oatmeal, hazelnut and subtle oak characters, blending beautifully together on a soft, rounded, attractively fresh and long-finishing palate. 13.5 percent Food - Now with crayfish in season, I'd pull out the Lubiana to have with the cold crayfish and simple mayonnaise salad. Graeme Phillips - Sunday Tasmanian 9th November 2008
2003 Collina Chardonnay “The Murray River would be in a lot better nick if its growers followed the Lubianas, who sold up and moved to Tassie, to make majestic wines like this. It’s powerful, and incredibly intense, yet finely poised and elegant. Krug sans fizz. The Lubies crappy loam, silt, gravel and clay surrenders just a kilogram of grapes per vine, but they add up to the best Australian Chardonnay I know. Spicy nutty, custardy, tight- most words just don’t fit. Try, DEVOUR. ($60; 13.5% Alcohol; 95 Points)” The Independent Weekly, January 27 to February 2 2007, My Picks, Philip White “Steve Lubiana already makes some of Tassies best wines, and this new reserve Chardonnay will build his reputation even further: complex yet refined, full of creamy texture and balanced by lingering mineral acidity. Drink with grilled lobster." Australian Gourmet Traveller, March 2007. Max Allen 2003 Estate Chardonnay “.......sweet melon, peach and citrus aromas are backed by hints of honeysuckle and slightly funky, creamy and leesy undertones. Round and juicy, its soft and generous core of nectarine, citrus and peach-like fruit and complex undertones of butterscotch, grilled notes and vanilla oak are neatly tied together by tangy lime juice acids. 92 Points” 2004 ‘Primavera’ Chardonnay flavours, the palate soft and rounded with the fruit underlined by lovely savoury yeast characters running to a long, fresh, clean finish. Alc. 13.5%. Rating: - Very Good Graeme Philips The Sunday Tasmanian, 14th May 2006 2003 ‘Primavera’ Chardonnay
“ Food and wine matching is far from being a Science, a good match most often being the product of informed guesswork and a bit of luck. And a good match is mostly as good as it gets. But a perfect match, one where the flavours and the weight of the wine and food dance together in perfect unison, wonderfully complimenting and enhancing each other is as rare and serendipitous as it is pleasurable. So a rare pleasure it was over the Christmas break to enjoy one such perfect union – Mitsuno’s cold broth of soba noodles, soy, wasabi, seaweed and daikon radish with a Lubiana 2003 ‘Primavera’ Chardonnay, each highly enjoyable in its own right but fabulous and memorable together.” The Mercury, 5 January 2005, Top Drops Graeme Phillip 2002 Sur Lie Chardonnay
Rating 90Touches of biscuit and toast aromas ex lees; relatively soft stone fruit and peach flavours; good acidity to balance. James Halliday 2006 Australian Wine Companion (Collins, Australia 2005) 2002 Chardonnay
Steve Lubiana is helping setting the standard for Tasmanian wine- your only problem is getting your hands on the stuff. The Estate Chardonnay is big, rich, with spiced pear and a hint of fresh apples shot through with juicy tropical fruit and toffee. Immaculately controlled oak and good length.
